Sep 12, Aromatherapy for Dogs: Is it Safe? Can it Help?

The therapeutic properties of aromatherapy are well documented for humans. But did you know that aromatherapy for dogs can also benefit our canine friends?

How does aromatherapy work?

Aromatherapy uses plant essential oils and hydrosols to heal or prevent illness and to enhance overall health and wellbeing. The essential oils are either absorbed through the skin or inhaled. When the active plant compounds enter the bloodstream they act as a medicine or as a psychological trigger depending on the oil and the person or pet being treated.

What is the difference between an essential oil and a hydrosol?

Essential oils and hydrosols are the volatile chemical compounds contained in plant matter (flowers, roots, bark and leaves). They are usually extracted from the plant by steam distillation. The volatile aroma compounds are then separated into oil-soluble and water-soluble compounds. The oil-soluble components form the essential oil. The water-soluble compounds together with the distilled water constitute the hydrosol. Essential oils are highly concentrated and must be diluted with a carrier oil before massaging or spraying onto skin or fur. Hydrosols are much gentler and are suitable for use with smaller animals.

How can aromatherapy for dogs help?

Animal aromatherapists use essential oils and hydrosols to treat many common physical complaints. These include skin problems, arthritis, fleas and ticks, and pet odor. Some oils are used for their antiseptic and antibacterial properties, while others can be used to aid the healing of an injury or to boost the immune system.

Aromatherapy for dogs is also used in emotional issues. Certain essential oils can calm an anxious pet, while others can energize a lethargic animal. Some oils are used to relieve psychological problems such as abandonment, fear and loneliness, or behavioral problems such as aggression, phobias and separation anxiety.

Emotional trauma causes stress, and stress is the source of many (if not most) serious illness. Aromatherapy for dogs can be an important tool in treating and maintaining both the emotional and physical health.

Can animals choose their own essential oils?

We know that animals in the wild practice zoopharmacognosy or self-medication. They have access to hundreds of different plant species, allowing them to intuitively maintain good health. Domestic pets don't have access to the medicinal plant compounds found in the wild. But if you've ever seen a dog eating wild grass or blackberries you'll know that domestic animals recognize plant medicines. They have retained some innate knowledge of the correct remedy required to heal themselves and restore wellbeing.

Aromatherapy for dogs can be used in tandem with an animal’s instinctive knowledge. A dog will often choose the plant medicine he needs.

What does an animal aromatherapist do?

When treating an animal, an aromatherapist will offer a selection of oils that he or she thinks will most benefit the animal. Only diluted oil is offered for inhalation and the bottle is held no closer than a couple of feet from the dog’s nose. The aromatherapist will look for subtle signs that the dog is interested. Eye twitching or turning the head towards the oil would indicate that the dog is responding to the oil. When the animal has had enough he will turn away.

The dog may show strong interest by going right up to the bottle. Or he may show no interest or complete indifference. This would indicate that the animal may not need that remedy for now, but also wouldn't rule out offering it again in the future. A dog may totally reject an oil by turning away or even leaving the room.

Animal aromatherapy checklist

It is not recommended that you attempt to treat your pet with aromatherapy without the advice of a professional. Still, if you do wish to use essential oils with your dog then here is some cautionary advice.

Are essential oils safe for cats?

therapy for cats is to proceed with caution and professional guidance. Cats have a different way of metabolizing chemical compounds than dogs or humans. Many oils that are safe to use on dogs are toxic to cats and can cause liver or kidney damage. While certain essential oils are entirely harmless, the best advice concerning aroma Essential oils have powerful healing properties if used correctly. But as with all medicines, they should be treated with caution and respect. If in doubt, seek qualified expert advice from an animal aromatherapist or holistic vet.

UNSOLICITED TESTIMONIALS
From Our Doggedly Loyal Customers:

"I am the kind of person who always speaks up when I think I'm not getting my money's worth for anything. I am also not hesitant to give praise where praise is due.

With that said I bought some of your DentaSure teeth spray for my cat. I received it at the beginning of this week. After 3 DAYS of using this product her teeth have already gone from a scary looking brown and very unhealthy to a light shade of yellow.

I am absolutely blown away by how fast this product has helped her teeth improve and the fact that it's all natural is huge to me (the vet has been pushing me to pay $720 for a cleaning including anesthesia!!).

My only regret is not finding you guys sooner!! Keep up the great work!!!!" ~ Fred Brennan, Waymouth, MA

"We have 3 dogs. One is almost 10, the second is 2 but is fighting Valley Fever right now and the third is 2 also.

We put the VF dog on antibiotics as soon as she began coughing. The old man never really started but I seem to remember he has had Kennel Cough before so he may now have some immunity.

The third dog started to cough on Thursday and by Saturday it was just awful to listen to. She was trying to hack up a lung and leaving foamy puddles of spit ALL OVER our house.

Thank goodness your Primalix KC arrived so fast. It came in the mail on Saturday afternoon. I immediately dosed all 3 dogs.

Overnight the cough was drastically reduced. I am amazed! I am continuing to treat all 3 dogs for another week.

Thanks for an incredible product. Please do not hesitate to use this review on your website." ~ Lyn Chambers, Phoenix, AZ

"Dear TripleSure,

We are pleased with the cedar and peppermint flea spray - it seems to perform as promised & that's a big deal here in Florida which is flea central.

Finally, a practical alternative to the nasty spot style flea pesticides. I will recommend this to my friends who (like us) don't want to use the traditional toxic treatments.

My dog also smells woodsey, a lovely side benefit. We sprayed the house and the combo is working. THANKS!" ~ Michelle G., Ft. Myers, FL

"I have two dogs that have kennel cough. I bought the Primalix combo for the immune system and the kennel cough. The medicine arrived today and for the first time in two years, no coughing!"
~ Kerry Jacques, Temecula, CA

"I just want to thank you for your wonderful products and caring nature.

We made the decision to put Oreo to sleep on Tuesday. She was much worse Tuesday morning and it was time to let go. It was very hard as my husband and I wanted so bad for her to go on her own, but it was the right decision.

I know that your products helped give her a little more quality time with us than she would have had without them. I would also like all pet lovers to know the importance of spaying and neutering as early as possible - preferably before the first heat cycle - to decrease the chance of getting mammary gland cancer. Studies show mammary tumors in cats are 80% likely to be cancerous.

If I would have known about this risk, I would have started Oreo on the Primalix C-Care for cancer as a preventative measure long ago. I am going to continue giving it to my other 2 cats at least once or twice a week to hopefully prevent them from getting cancer.

Again, thank you so much for your kindness and compassion."

~ Jane Hicks, Thomasville, NC

“I just received my order of your flea and tick spray. Ok, at first I was skeptical, but now my wife and I are impressed. We see fleas or ticks on our German Shepard “Bumpers” or our Cocker Spaniel “Bella,” they get sprayed and – “Voila!” – dead fleas or ticks.

The buy one get one free was a good deal. A little pricey, but if you want the best this does what it claims and is worth the money.

I want to thank you for making a product that actually works. On a scale from 1 to 10, TripleSure gets a 12.”

~ George and Brenda Campbell, Defuniak Springs, FL

"The DentaSure from my order of a week ago is already working on my 2 maltese's teeth and they both like it, making the job of cleaning their teeth much easier for me and is much more effective than trying to brush.

Wish I heard about it (on tv) long ago! I plan to encourage my friends with dogs or cats to try it.

Thank you for your immediate response to my inquiry. You are very efficient!

~ Joyce Snelling, Sun Lakes, AZ

"Just wanted to let you know that my 3 year old Pomerian no longer has any dark tear stains after using your Tidy Tears formula. What a relief.

As a retired dog groomer I knew most products were not successful and I wished I had answers for my clients who lived with these tear stains. I did not want my dog to have to live with it also.

Tidy Tears has all natural ingredients which I look for for my pets. Nice to have found a product that works after all these years in time for my Pom."

~ Marie Cherry, Altoona, FL

"Your TripleSure product and customer service are first rate. I have been using it on my Wire Haired Pointing Griffon for the past 10 months. Living in Minnesota we are in prime tick country. My dog has been in the thick of them on extended canoe trips, hunting in tall grass and daily trips along the Minnesota river trails.

TripleSure has prevented ticks & fleas. Granted, after water activity, it must be re-applied. However, this is a small price to pay considering not having the questionable chemical cocktail running through her from the standard systemic solutions such as Frontline. I have found that performance is enhanced if I take a minute to work in the spray by hand & finish it off with a light brush. Griffons have a double coat. My guess is that other breeds won’t need this."

~ K.C. Carpenter, Minnesota

"Thank you so much for offering these alternative solutions for really dangerous drugs vets give dogs and cats. I will always shop with you, and tell others."

~ Robin Kincaid, Port Orchard, WA

"I am very happy with the way my 9 year old lab has responded to your arthritis remedy. We were considering much more invasive methods, and now I am so happy we found your herbal remedies.

We are all the way from Istanbul, Turkey, and find ways to carry the remedies with us or with people coming from the US to Turkey. I really do think you are doing a great job for dogs and cats. As an animal lover I shall spread the word as much as I can."

~ Can Malta, Istanbul, Turkey

"I wanted everyone to know that this product is amazing for dogs with Cushing's. My dog looked terrible -- pot belly, bones showing, dry coat, back legs with no strength. We have used this for 3 weeks and it has made a tremendous difference... Getting ready to order 3 months supply. Wonderful product."

~ Tammy Perry from Virginia

"About 3 years ago my cat Timmy was diagnosed with diabetes. The vet put him on insulin injections which were a disaster and his health deteriorated greatly and he exuded a horrible odor.

I had my doubts about him being treated as a Type 1 diabetic as in the human population over 90% of people have Type 2, non-insulin dependant, diabetes.

So as my cat Timmy was practically dying in front of me I ordered your Primalix for cat blood sugar control. Within a short time of being on Primalix he recovered and also recovered from his diabetic neuropathy so he was able to jump again.

He has been on Primalix now for almost 3 years and the results have been wonderful. Also our vet is amazed at his progress.

I would, without hesitation, recommend any pet owner whose pet has blood sugar control problems to go onto Primalix----its a life saver!

With great appreciation,

Yours sincerely,"

"I bought this product about 5 days ago, It is Amazing! I have both dogs and cats and everything I used was NOT working until Now! I see no fleas and nobody is scratching themselves to death! TripleSure is a Godsend. If you have a problem with fleas do not hesitate to buy this product. I am now a customer for life! Thank you Natural Wonder!"

~ Susan Fussell, Jupiter, FL

"I have been using your TripleSure flea and tick spray and do very much love it. All you stated is TRUE, I can not thank you enough for making my life and my pets life more enjoyable. THANK YOU for what you are doing for animals and the world!!!"

~ Terree W., Atlanta, GA

"Just a note to let you know that Taylor's breast cancer is completely gone. This was on only one bottle of C-Care. She had tumors the size of pecans in both front teats. 4 years ago when she was 9 years old, she had a tumor the size of a Nerf football on her side. The vet said nothing could be done. It took 4 bottles of C-Care, but cancer completely cured. This is such a marvelous product, I tell everyone about it as cancer seems to becoming so common in our doggies.

Thank you so much for your research & efforts to help our precious babies. Seeing Taylor run and play, and play with toys at 13 years, is more than I could have ever hoped for! Please use this note to let others know that this product really really works. Thanks again so very very much!"

Jul 16, Is Your Flea Killer Safe... Naturally?

Laboratory studies of flea killer and tick control ingredients in seven popular products reveal adverse health effects in all animals tested.

The effects of these well known and aggressively marketed products range from convulsions, body tremors and labored breathing to thyroid cancer, brain lesions, and liver and lung tumors. Yet TV commercials with trusty looking veterinarians pitch only the happy side of these products.

Which flea killer and tick pesticide are you using on your best friends?

If your favorite flea killer contains the active ingredient Fipronil, Imidacloprid, Methoprene, Permethrin, Pyriproxyfen or the inert ingredient Butyldydroxytoluene, Butylhydroxanisole, Carbitol, Ethanol, or Polyvinlpyrrplidone, you need to know about the not-so-happy side of these products as well.

Advantage Flea (Bayer Corporation), Adams Spot-On Flea and Tick Control (Farnam Pet Products), BioSpot Flea and Tick Control (Farnam Pet Products), Defend EXspot Treatment (Schering-Plough Animal Health), Frontline Top Spot (Merial Limited), Frontline Flea Plus (Merial Limited), and Zodiac FleaTrol Spot On (Wellmark International) - all contain one or more of the aforementioned active or inert ingredients.

Toxicology and morbidity findings from these pesticide products were gathered over a decade of laboratory testing by the United States Environmental Protection Agency; Occupational Safety & Health Administration, U.S. Department of Labor; Extension Toxicology Network; Journal of Pesticide Reform; Pesticide Action Network North America and other sources, with additional information supplied by Material Safety Data Sheets.

Most testing was performed for the benefit of new dog flea and cat flea product manufacturers in order to qualify for EPA registration. Scientists overdose laboratory animals to determine how much of the product will kill 50% of the test population. Information is then extrapolated and assumptions made that may apply to domestic animals and human beings.

According to laboratory tests, Fipronil (Frontline Top Spot and Frontline Plus) is a neurotoxin and suspected human cancer agent. Fipronil can cause liver toxicity, thyroid cancer, kidney damage, raised cholesterol, lack of coordination, labored breathing, miscarriages and stunted offspring.

Laboratory testing of Imidacloprid (Advantage) on mice, dogs and rats shows this insecticide to be neurotoxic to laboratory animals, also causing a breakdown of coordination, labored breathing, lesions of the thyroid, reduced birth weight, and increased birth defects.

The synthetic broad spectrum pyrethroid insecticide Permethrin (Adams Spot-on Flea and Tick Control; BioSpot Flea and Tick Control; and Defend EXspot Treatment) shows indications of being an endocrine disrupter and the cause of lung cancer and liver tumors in laboratory animals.

Methoprene and Pyriproxyfen (Zodiac FleaTrol Spot On; and BioSpot Flea and Tick Control) are known as insect growth regulators (IGR), both of which restrict the growth of fleas to the juvenile stage where reproduction is not possible. Laboratory testing reveals that Methoprene causes enlarged livers and degeneration of the kidneys.

Unfortunately, few people actually read EPA test results. Fewer still want to hear about the many laboratory test subjects (unwanted dogs and cats) killed during and after the studies in order to determine damage to specific systems and organs. But it only takes a few people with straightforward thinking to bring about change. Are you ready to stop this insanity? There are effective alternatives, as you know.

Today there are totally natural flea killer and tick remedies - completely harmless to kids, pets and the environment - made from pure botanical essential oils. Some natural products work fairly well, some not so much, and some work much better than name brand toxic chemicals.

The mode of action - the way these natural flea treatments kill fleas and ticks - is to disrupt the insect's ability to function by blocking a substance called octopamine.

In nature, certain plants have developed a natural defense against bugs. These "octopamine blockers" in plants are extracted as oils and used as active ingredients. Octopamine is to an insect what adrenalin is to a human. When blocked from the system, the insect quickly dies. No muss, no fuss - a natural flea control. Nobody gets hurt but the bugs.

Please begin today to stop supporting the heartless laboratory testing of innocent animals, the insidious cover-up and rush to market of big business, and the unwitting harm we may be doing to our children, our pets, and our planet.

Kind regards,

Gary Le Mon

Should I Get a Dog?

Hey Everybody,We're back with another to help you with tips on how to take care of your furry love ones.So if you are in the market to getting a pet or even getting another one then this will help you decide on what you should think about.Tell everybody hello Nitro and lets get started.
(Nitro: Hello everybody.)

Should I Get a Dog?

The short answer is, of course, yes! If you never had the fortune to grow up with dogs, or to know a friend who had a dog, you do not know the amazingly fun times you are missing! Depending on where you live and what kind of dog is right for you, you can take it swimming, hunting, walking around, on the bus, on a jog, or simply just to the dog park to meet other like-minded dog owners. While there are many considerations to go over as to whether a dog is right for you and your current situation (Do you have the space? Do you have the time?), dogs are scientifically proven to be good for the person who owns them and their family. So, if you have a house with a nice backyard and have a spare hour a day, get looking for a new sidekick! Following are some of the most impressive reasons that owning a dog isn't just a costly endeavor.

One good thing about owning a dog is that they will help you live longer. That's right! While pets provide their owners with the love and company they so desire, it is difficult to say exactly why people who own dogs live longer. There is evidence that dogs can help you reduce your blood pressure! This article probably does not have to tell you how fun it can be to play with your dog, cuddle with your dog, or just hang around and watch your dog experience new things. Well, owning a pet can lower your blood pressure as effectively as if you were to start eating a low-salt diet or restricting how much alcohol you drink. So get a dog, then grab a beer. This is why many hospitals and retirement community centers hire on a dog to come in and engage in "animal therapy" with the patients and residents: not only does it help old people by reducing their blood pressure and offering them a distraction from any worries or sad thoughts in their lives, but it also acts as a calming presence that eliminates loneliness. At this point in the article it is already clear that dogs are somewhat of a wonder cure for many of life's ills!

Studies by the US Department of Health have come to the conclusion that pets helped victims of heart attacks--the study reads that 28% of heart patients who also had pets survived "serious heart attacks", while only about 6% of people without pets made it through. If that's not enough, you can also measure how much good it does you to own a dog by measuring your before-and-after waistline. A recent study has concluded that pet owners had 2% lower cholesterol than those without pets, and those pet owners' chance of going through cardiac arrest was reduced by 4%.

Not only are dogs good for you, but they are good for your kids, too. You do not need to read studies to view the delight on children's faces as they play with dogs. But, just in case that was not enough evidence for you, a few studies have been done to prove how good it is for kids to own pets. A certain study showed that children who were in the vicinity of a dog during their physical examinations had reduced blood pressure, less behavioral problems or distress, and lower heart rates than when a dog was nowhere to be found.

In conclusion, a dog is sometimes hard work. If you've never owned a pet before, you may have to become accustomed to picking up the feces of your companion at the most inopportune times. The dog, depending on what type it is, may be aggressive or too timid, very easy or very hard to train, and may either be too smart for its own good or not live up to your standards of intelligence. These are the facts. However, if you give them love, they will return it with all of their energy--it is what they were bred to do and why the humans have let them stick around for the past thousands of years.

Picking The Right Chihuahua Teacup Puppies...

Picking The Right Chihuahua Teacup Puppies...

Taking care of a puppy is a big commitment, and surprisingly, it doesn't get any smaller with the size of the dog. Chihuahua teacup puppies are adorable, tiny creatures that need all the things a bigger puppy does, and some specialized care based on their size.

Breeders use the term 'teacup' to mean an extremely small dog. However, it has no standardized meaning, so the definition can vary from breeder to breeder. Chihuahuas bred to the breed standard are very small to begin with, something that many people are not aware of because there are so many poorly-bred, larger ones around. The standard says this breed should not exceed 5 pounds.

Dogs that are too small cannot safely carry a litter. Depending on which breeder you ask, the lowest possible size is about 3 1/2 pounds. This means that larger females are required in order to keep creating tiny pups, who may have a tiny father. Sometimes a tiny pup appears in a litter from 'normal' sized (3-5 pound) dogs, as well.

Dogs are much closer in size when they are born than they are when they reach adulthood. This is why a Labrador can have ten pups, but a Chihuahua is usually limited to two or three. There are exceptions, but most litters will be less than five. Size at birth does not always translate to size at adulthood, though.

An experienced breeder can tell you about how big his or her pups get. He or she can also tell you about the sizes of dogs in the parents' background, and make an educated guess based on the size of the puppy at 8 weeks. However, no one will always be right. Don't choose size over health, because no one can guarantee the former and the latter is so very important.

Living with a tiny puppy requires some special care. One of the things that can afflict them that is not common in larger breeds is low blood sugar. This occurs when they do not eat often enough, and may require frequent feeding of special food for the first few weeks they live with you. Most dogs grow out of the problem.

Having a tiny bladder also means that Chihuahua teacup puppies find it harder to hold it when they have to go. Many people choose to potty-train using pads, paper, or a litter box, for this reason. Either way, frequent access to the potty spot is going to be required in order to house train them.
