Known simply as the genial sounding ‘Parvo,’ this disease is anything but friendly. A relatively new virus (it was only discovered in 1978) Parvo has quickly spread throughout the world-wide dog population. Parvovirus is highly contagious and is passed on through contact with infected dog faeces.
Some dogs, such as Rottweilers, Doberman Pinschers, Labradors and German Shepherds are more susceptible to Parvo, but any breed of dog may contract the virus. As with most illness, general factors such as stress, infection and the presence of parasites put dogs at greater risk. Vaccines offer some protection, but many are outdated or have a poor survival rate. Even if your dog has been vaccinated, you should still keep an eye out for signs and symptoms of Parvovirus.
There are two forms of Parvovirus, cardiac and intestinal. The cardiac form is less common and usually attacks young puppies causing respiratory or cardiovascular failure. The intestinal form of the virus is much more common, affecting both adult dogs and puppies.
Parvovirus attacks the bone marrow, the producer of the body’s blood cells. Any virus which seriously affects the production of new cells deals a major blow to the body’s immune system. Parvo also attacks the lymphatic system and can severely damage the gastro-intestinal tract. The virus can lead to Myocarditis (inflammation and infection of the heart muscle) and in extreme cases it can cause Sepsis, an infection of the blood.
The first symptom of Parvovirus is lethargy, closely followed by loss of appetite, diarrhea and vomiting. Diarrhea and vomiting inevitably lead to dehydration and this is often what kills a dog rather than the virus itself. Loss of protein and blood (which leak into the intestine) can cause anemia. Damage to the intestinal lining and weakening of the immune system also greatly increase the risk of secondary infection, another cause of death.
At present there is no specific cure for Canine Parvovirus. Take a dog with Parvo to a conventional vet and he or she will typically treat the symptoms of Parvo rather than the virus itself. Conventional treatment will consist of a pharmaceutical concoction of anti-vomiting medicines, harmful antibiotics and even possible blood transfusions.
On the other hand, it is possible to avoid inflicting this drugstore cocktail on your dog. Parvovirus is a serious illness and needs FAST action to

Echinacea
Echinacea is nature’s anti-biotic and is well-known among herbalists for its ability to boost immune function. 1 Used by Native Americans as an herbal ‘cure-all’ it has traditionally treated scarlet fever, malaria, diphtheria, and blood poisoning. Until the discovery of antibiotics, Echinacea was the preferred medical treatment for infections. Some studies have proved Echinacea’s anti-viral action against avian flu 2, swine flu and the herpes virus. 3
Clove (Syzygium aromaticum)
Cloves are used in Ayurvedic and Chinese medicines to treat nausea, vomiting and diarrhea. They are powerful anti-oxidants and contain eugenol which, in medical trials, has also shown anti-viral activity. 4+5
Astragalus
Used in ancient Chinese medicine, Astragalus stimulates and supports the immune system. In some more recent studies, Astragalus supplements were given to chemotherapy patients to promote a speedier recovery of the patients’ immune systems.
Like Clove and Echinacea, this herb has also demonstrated anti-viral properties. There are numerous clinical trials which show that Astragalus kills viruses such as hepititis and herpes, and also combats infections associated with chronic diseases.
One study demonstrated that Astragalus improved cell immunity during viral Myocarditis, 6 one of the conditions potentially caused by Parvovirus. It has also been proven to increase bone marrow function and production of new blood cells during cases of aplastic anemia, which can also be caused by Parvo. 7
Dandelion Root (Taraxacum officinale)
An old favorite, Dandelion has long been used for its detoxifying properties. In Europe, it was once used to control diarrhea and it is also has anti-inflammatory and pain relieving actions.
Burdock Root
Traditionally used to detoxify the blood, Burdock root is also a powerful anti-oxidant and anti-inflammatory. It has demonstrated prebiotic properties to promote overall health.
The dynamic duo of Dandelion and Burdock has long been used for their double action of detoxifying the liver and kidneys, essential in helping the body recover from viral infections.
Shiitake Mushroom (Lentinula edodes)
Shiitake is one of most widely used medicinal mushrooms and it’s no wonder. This fantastic member of the fungi family has demonstrated near miraculous properties. Sheep Sorrel (Rumex acetosella)
Also called Dock or Red Sorrel, Sheep Sorrel may appear to be a common weed, but is a useful healing herb packed with antioxidants. It was once used to treat cancer by Native Indian tribes and is the main ingredient in Essiac, a popular herbal cancer treatment.
